Speaker 1:Have you ever seen the words invitation? Only Do they stop you in your tracks? We are wired for connection and belonging, and those words can feel a little bit rough, right? It makes me think of the scene in Crotty Kid when Daniel LaRusso, ralph Maccio's character, shows up at Allie's country club and he can't get in because it's for members only. And then they won't even let him step into the lobby because he doesn't have the right kind of jacket on he's wearing that red windbreaker and so he sneaks into the club through the kitchen to try to get Allie's attention, and that turns into an actual disaster. And of course there's Cinderella and the invitation to the ball and so many other movie scenes where an invitation is the ticket right.
Speaker 1:Invitations come in all shapes and sizes, and today we're going to talk about how powerful an invitation can truly be. I know that we've all experienced the burn of not being invited to something a time or ten right, a time or ten. But today we're going to focus on the upside of an invitation and using invitation powers for good instead of evil. Cue that theme song to Mean Girls, and let's just let that play out, because we today are going to focus on the power of an invitation and how it can be transformational and how it can change your life and how you can use an invitation to change someone else's life. So I want to tell you about one of the best invitations that Greg and I have ever received, like this invitation hands down one of the very, very, very best invitations ever. And we've been married for 25 years. Spoiler alert it wasn't to a party or on a really cool trip or something like the Super Bowl. It was actually better than any of those things.
Speaker 1:So we moved eight times in 10 years and we were moving a lot. And when we moved to New Mexico in 2003, we actually lived in a Holiday Inn Express for a couple of weeks while our house was getting ready. Every time I see commercials about staying in a Holiday Inn Express, it takes me right back to when we lived in a Holiday Inn Express, and it was actually one of the most memorable experiences we've ever had. So there was another family with kids the same age as our boys, and they were living in the hotel too, while their house was being restored from black mold, and every morning, their mom and I would find ourselves in the lobby with our kids, and our kids were living their best lives because there was this giant cereal bar you know the one I'm talking about and a breakfast buffet, and we would just sit in that lobby inviting our time until the pool opened or it was time to go on some adventure in this small town in New Mexico and do something besides sitting in the hotel all day, and one Friday we saw each other in the lobby on our way to nap time. Let's have a moment of silence for those days, because those were amazing and a transformational invitation came, like life changing transformational invitation. This mom invited us to go to church with them.
Speaker 1:So I had been in ministry for years and we were actively looking for a church, but, to be honest, we never, ever, not ever would have gone to this church without a specific invitation, and this church was in a strip mall, like on the far end of town. We wouldn't have even driven past the church and seen it, and the only way we would have known about it is if we were looking for this specific type of church in the yellow pages of the phone book. The phone book. This is how long ago it was or if we got an invitation. And this invitation to go to this church will be forever one of the most significant invitations we've ever received and we will forever be grateful for that invitation. It changed our life. It changed our boys' lives and it thinking about it right now kind of gives me a lump in my throat, because it meant so much to us and has continued to mean so much, and it's just part of our family and part of who we are as people and we are just so, so, grateful.
Speaker 1:So did you know that there are actually millions of people who don't do something or don't take action towards something because they are waiting to be invited? They never start something or move in a direction they desire to move in because they are literally waiting for an invitation. And I wonder if you've ever seen that or felt it yourself, and I wonder if you'd think for a minute about something that you are waiting to be invited to. You see, an invitation can hold so much power. And you might be thinking back right now like having literal flashbacks to your childhood or your teenage years, when not getting invited to something brought up a whole bunch of feelings you'd rather not repeat. I have really good news for you. You don't have to repeat that, you don't have to think about it, and if you think back for a quick second, you'd see that missing out on that invitation just give it a quick second was actually protection from something, and you are actually better for not being invited to that specific thing that you missed out on. We're gonna talk more about that on another episode, that whole protection piece, but for now I wanna keep us going in the direction of the power of an invitation.
Speaker 1:So the words you're invited can actually give you what feels like a dopamine hit and when it's the right kind of invitation, it can help you experience a sense of belonging. And if you're in the resource lounge, you know that when you experience belonging you are primed for growth. So anytime you experience belonging or help someone else feel that you're primed for growth, and I don't know anyone who doesn't wanna be ready for growth. I don't know anybody who doesn't wanna be ready for growth. So I wonder if you'd think for nine minutes about some things that you are waiting to be invited to. Is it a class? Is it a mom's group? Is it to launch a podcast or write a book, or start a business, or go to a Bible study. This list could literally go on and on for days. And then I want you to think about some of the best invitations you've ever received and take a minute to thank the people who extended those invitations to you. And then, on the flip side, I want you to think about something that you could invite someone to. An invitation can have a transformational impact on your life and, if you have one, on your business, and I want to invite you into considering how you can use nine minutes to extend an invitation to someone and how you can use nine minutes to thank someone for an invitation they extended to you.
Speaker 1:I can't wait to connect with you on the next episode. Thanks so much for listening today. Do you have questions you'd love to ask but don't because you aren't sure who to ask? Or you'd rather not let the world in on not having it all together? I get it. I get lots of questions all the time, from parenting to business development, to Bible study, recommendations to the best meal to serve a crowd and even how to navigate hard conversations. My husband and kids call me Google, and since I'm a problem solver by nature and love research, it sort of fits. So I am so excited to answer your questions. You can share your questions with me by DMing me on Instagram at Jennifer Seiss, and I'll answer your questions on an upcoming episode. So here's to more intentional connection and less grind, nine minutes at a time.
