Speaker 1:

If you had a dollar for every time you heard yourself or someone else say I don't have time for that, you'd probably be rich. I know life can feel like a circus, especially when you're trying to juggle it all, and I know what it's like to be pulled in a million different directions and to feel like there's never enough time to do all the things for all the people. But I really believe that what you want is possible. It just requires some decision making and intentional action. You truly can't make time or find time. You have to set it apart, and I'll show you how to make big moves and take game changing action nine minutes at a time.

Speaker 1:

I'm Jennifer Seiss. I love helping impact-oriented women run their home life and business, gain traction in their day to day and have more time with the people they love the most. My heart is to share what I've learned along the way and help you get more of what you want out of your life and work. Every episode is designed to get you on your way to a quick win. So grab your favorite beverage, pull up a chair and let's start making more of your time. Hey there, and welcome to the In 9 Minutes podcast. I'm Jennifer Seiss, and I can't wait to connect with you over the next nine minutes.

Speaker 1:

One of the words, one of the things that is used most commonly to describe feelings when people are kind of out of sorts is overwhelm, and I'm here to tell you that action is the fastest way out of overwhelm. The fastest way to move towards the person you want to be is setting apart your time, honoring how you set it apart and taking action towards those things you can't make time or find time. You have to set it apart and you might want to write this down, because it is a great phrase and reminder to put in your planner, on post-its, on your bathroom mirror, written in lipstick, literally everywhere. Because you can't make time or find time, you have to set it apart. And to set apart means to separate something and keep it for a special purpose, and time is your most valuable resource, so you want to use it for special and intentional purposes. When you experience the power of setting apart time, you will change the game. When you set apart your time more intentionally and wisely and you put that principle into practice, it will change the game for you because, like I said, time is your most valuable resource and I'm here to tell you that everybody gets the same amount of time, and I know that different seasons bring different responsibilities and demands, but, all in all, you can apply the things that I'm going to share today to any season, and things that I share on each episode are things that you can apply in any season of your life.

Speaker 1:

So being effective with your time isn't a one-time event, and you get to decide how you use your time and you get to decide what you set it apart for over and over and over, and if the day doesn't go so well, you get 24 hours the next day. But there is a way to make some choices and decisions in advance that will change the game for you. You make your choices and your choices make you. So how you set your schedule determines how you live your life, and the decisions you make today impact tomorrow and impact the person you are aiming to be. So show me your schedule and I'll see your priorities. I'm sure you've heard that phrase before, and this is so true, and it's never too late to rethink your schedule. Now. We aren't going to design a new schedule for you today, during this episode, but I'm going to offer some new thoughts around time that will help you make decisions and take action and move towards honoring your schedule differently, so you can learn how to run your time. It's actually a skill and, like any other skill, it takes practice and a mindset shift. So I'm gonna help you with just that and we are going to dig in to some of the things that will help you shift your mindset around time so that you can be more honoring of your schedule, set apart your time more intentionally and take game-changing action.

Speaker 1:

So the first thing we need to do is we need to ditch the lies that the world has bombarded us with around time and replace them with truth and a fervent effort to honor the time we have well. We really need to steward our time. We all wanna steward our resources well and, like I said, time is one of your most precious resources. So how you navigate time changes with each stage and season of life and that's okay Goals and priority shift, but for now we're gonna focus on the basics. So time is one of the few things that is universal and unchanging, but the world has conditioned us to think that the only way to be successful is to hustle 24 seven and live in the grind. So we can thank our culture for that feeling, and now we can move past it, since we know the culprit of that feeling. Let's move on. So the world tells us, in order to be successful and get what we want, we have to be in the grind.

Speaker 1:

But I'm going to offer you a new thought, and it's this. Growth and being intentional trumps the grind all day, every day, and the grind just in case you wanna know what that is is physically and mentally depleting. It's rooted in the culture and comparison, and the grind pays with things like gaps in relationship, wondering how you even got started and forgetting the whole reason you started your own business or started to learn something new, and the whole reason that you started a new business or make intentional decisions is very likely that you are going to have more time with the people that matter most and a greater impact. Those are usually the catalysts for starting a business or starting anything new, and also income, obviously, but for now, let's talk about what matters most and a greater impact, and the tricky thing is that one of the things that we are gonna continue to talk about on the show and I do a deep dive on a lot of these things in my five day challenge and coaching.

Speaker 1:

But it's very likely that you have some habits and some thoughts that aren't so awesome around time because you've just been doing the same thing over and over and you think it's enough and you don't let yourself want more or you don't acknowledge that you want more, or you haven't taken the time to dig into what you really want and you think about time in a way that feels like there's a lot of pressure and you never have enough of it, and the thought you feed is the thought that grows. So the more you tell yourself or think to yourself I don't have time for that or that will never happen, the more you will live those thoughts out. And even when you hear other people say, oh, I don't have time for that, I'm so busy you start to think and feel like you don't have time. So technology and non-existent boundaries impact our time significantly and we'll dig more into boundaries on another episode. But technology is a huge distraction.

Speaker 1:

Technology and lack of boundaries poke holes in our attention. They destroy our focus and we have got to get some control around those things because you get interrupted 50 to 60 times a day at a minimum. I'm willing to bet it's more like 100 at least. And when you get interrupted, it takes 23 and a half minutes to get back to the level of focus you had before you were interrupted. And think about it. If you're a mom, we can go ahead and double those numbers. We can go ahead and double the number you get interrupted a bajillion times a day.

Speaker 1:

So that's why setting apart time intentionally is so vital and that's why making decisions in advance and setting boundaries around time is vital, and this is why it is vital to learn how to effectively put small pockets of time to good use. That's why it's so vital to learn how to compress your time and double down in your focus and take massive intentional action, because you can do a full-time job in three hours a day if you're really, really focused. Studies show that. And also you can move the needle in nine minutes a day with specific, focused work. So time is an anchor for the world. We actually all have the same basic building blocks for time 24 hours a day and 168 hours a week, never anymore and never any less. And the pattern of 168 hours gets repeated day in and day out, and day in and day out, for forever. You can count on that, and every week you spend all 168 hours, whether you're doing it intentionally or not. So there are holes and gaps and pockets of time that are actually slipping away, and using it and setting it apart differently will change everything for you.

Speaker 1:

An inner twine. In the middle of these hours you have, like I mentioned before, a whole bunch of distractions, and distractions are a thing that prevents someone from giving full attention to something else. So think about all of the things that prevent you from giving full attention to something else and prevent you from doubling down, dialing in and focusing. Distractions just derail how you spend your time, and the lack of decision-making makes it even harder, because when you don't set apart your time specifically, you are More likely to get sucked into distractions, because you're trying to figure out what you're doing anyway. So when you don't make decisions around your time, you don't really know where your time end up, ends up going, and studies show that that we are terrible at guessing where our time goes. So recognizing distractions is so important, and that's the first thing we're going to do. So I want to encourage you to take nine minutes today to think about what your distractions really are and Take one action to eliminate that distraction. For example, if you are constantly getting Distracted by the dings and the notifications on your phone on voxter, on slack, turn the notifications off and set apart a time to check those platforms. If you really want to dial in on changing the way you think about time, head to the show notes. Jump into my next challenge, because you Can be the boss of your time. You can run your days so they don't run you. So here's some more growth and less grind, nine minutes at a time. Thanks so much for listening today.

Speaker 1:
