Resistance in a lot of ways is invisible ... until we call it out!!! We can’t see it but we can feel it (and often hear it) and it comes in the form of anxiety, stress, DISTRACTIONS, and DOUBT! It can come in the form of limiting beliefs, lies we believe, or the voices of other people.

Today's episode is inspired by Steven Pressfield's  book "The War of Art" and it is a juicy one!

Get ready for some tools and strategies to name, confront, and conquer resistance. It's time to embrace the discomfort of growth and celebrate every win so you can move closer to what you really want!

Remember, the struggle isn't just part of the process; it's very likely confirmation that you're on the path!

Jennifer Sise:

If you had a dollar for every time you heard yourself or someone else say I don't have time for that, you'd probably be rich. I know life can feel like a circus, especially when you're trying to juggle it all, and I know what it's like to be pulled in a million different directions and to feel like there's never enough time to do all the things for all the people. But I really believe that what you want is possible. It just requires some decision making and intentional action. You truly can't make time or find time. You have to set it apart, and I'll show you how to make big moves and take game changing action nine minutes at a time. I'm Jennifer Seiss. I love helping impact-oriented women run their home life and business, gain traction in their day to day and have more time with the people they love the most. My heart is to share what I've learned along the way and help you get more of what you want out of your life and work. Every episode is designed to get you on your way to a quick win. So grab your favorite beverage, pull up a chair and let's start making more of your time. Hey there, and welcome to the In 9 Minutes podcast. I'm Jennifer Seiss, and I can't wait to connect with you over the next nine minutes.

Jennifer Sise:

I heard the statement resistance can be beat the other day, and then I read it the very same day, and so now it's living rent-free in my head and I want to break it down with you because I think it could be a game changer. First, let's talk about what resistance is. So we're on the same page. And, as a quick side note, this subject will come up again and possibly again on the show, because it is a juicy one, a really juicy one. The definition of resistance is the refusal to accept or comply with something, the attempt to prevent something by action or argument, the impeding, slowing or stopping effect exerted by something on something else. And in a lot of ways resistance is invisible until we call it out. We can't see it, but we can feel it, and in our own lives we can often feel, we can often hear it, and it comes in the form of stress and distractions and procrastination and doubt, and it can come in the form of limiting beliefs and lies we believe, or even the voices of other people.

Jennifer Sise:

In his book the War of Art, stephen Pressfield says that we encounter resistance anytime we try to do something important. The more important a project is or when we're doing anything toward growth or the growth of someone else, the more resistance you are likely to feel. And I know you are doing a lot of important things, and those important things can be things like getting a handle on your health and wellness, writing a book, starting a podcast, reaching a financial milestone, getting your inbox to zero, teaching your kids something really important or having a hard conversation, and we've all felt resistance a million times. I already felt it like 10 times this morning on my way to record this podcast episode. In fact, here's a list of some things that most commonly bring about resistance Starting a calling in writing, painting, music, film, dance, any creative art.

Jennifer Sise:

Launching an entrepreneurial venture, so starting a business, any diet or health regimen, any activity with the aim for getting stronger education of every kind, growth in relationships, pursuing a spiritual calling this list could be really really long, but ultimately it's anything that rejects instant gratification in favor of long-term growth. Steven Pressfield also says that resistance only opposes in one direction and its movement from a lower level to a higher one, so I would say get ready for it when you're trying to be better, experience growth and move towards something that the world might blow off or think is not important, because in that case resistance is sure to follow. But taking a stand with your kids or making really definitive, decisive decisions that go against what the world says, resistance is sure to rise up in those cases and like I said before, resistance in a lot of ways is invisible until we call it out. We can't see it, but we can feel it, and it comes in the form of distractions, disruptions, procrastination, doubt and all of the things I mentioned before, and if we aren't careful we can generate it and perpetuate it, we can Stir it up. So what is there to do about it? First of all, resistance has no power on its own, so recognizing it and calling it out is half the battle.

Jennifer Sise:

Take a quick minute and think about times when you've talked yourself out of an action you needed to take. I mean, just sit with that thought for a minute. Think about times when you've talked yourself out of an action you needed to take. I can think of a bajillion, and it was probably this morning. The most recent time was probably this morning, and I wanna point out that there's likely a big project, or a dream project, that resistance is standing in the place of A big project or a dream project. That resistance is standing in the place of and we need to kick resistance to the curb.

Jennifer Sise:

Part of moving through resistance is a willingness to feel the burn and to be uncomfortable. It's not gonna be easy, but it's important and it's valuable. I don't think there's a person in the world who would say strength training feels amazing while it's happening. The burn is real, but once you get comfortable being uncomfortable and you move through it and you see the results and you see that the burn is worth it, you lean into it and do it again instead of resisting it. I know you have what it takes to draw a line in the sand for the sake of what you really want and what is possible for you. Growth is not given and it's hard, but I wanna tell you that even if you take three steps forward and two steps back, you are still advancing. That's the name of the game. So when you encounter resistance and notice I didn't say if, because you are a world changer and I know you're on edge of your seat, itching to take game-changing action so resistance will come and strength is built when you're moving through resistance and beating it, and you can get stronger by the day.

Jennifer Sise:

Before you let yourself say it sounds impossible and start talking yourself out of taking action, let me tell you that there is so much evidence all around you that resistance can be beat. You can beat it. Think about inventions of any kind airplanes, cars, even beauty products that are clean and don't use hormone damage and chemicals. Health and wellness experts who are sharing the more natural ways to heal your body. Parents who are staining firm when it comes to certain things with their kids, like limiting social media. And to make things personal, think about all of the times you have done hard things. Think about the business you started, the parenting you've done through hard seasons, the healing you've helped your body. Do the hard conversations you've had the firm foundation of your faith that you stand on over and over again, the sacrifices you've made because you knew they would pay off, the work you've done because you knew someone needed you to do it so you could help them.

Jennifer Sise:

I could go on and on for days and I'd be willing to bet that you've experienced a lot of resistance and yet here you are. You are ready to beat it. You've beaten it before and you can do it again and the world wants you to wade through resistance and succumb to it. But you don't have to, because you are strong enough to beat it. You are strong enough to call it out and move through it. The only thing you can control is what you do, and you have the power to beat resistance. You have to think about what you really want and be willing to put yourself in the seat or room or environment to move towards what you want, and you have to do that knowing that there will be resistance and believing you can beat it. I wanna challenge you to take nine minutes today to consider what you really want and where you've been letting resistance win, and then I want you to choose one action you can take to move through it, because the only way out is through. I can't wait for you to experience what's possible for you when you move through resistance, and I am pulling for you always. ["sing-a-ring"]. Thanks so much for listening today.

Jennifer Sise:

Do you have questions you'd love to ask, but don't because you aren't sure who to ask, or you'd rather not let the world in on not having it all together? I get it. I get lots of questions all the time, from parenting, to business development, to Bible study recommendations, to the best meal to serve a crowd and even how to navigate hard conversations. My husband and kids call me Google and since I'm a problem solver by nature and love research, it sort of fits. So I am so excited to answer your questions. You can share your questions with me by DMing me on Instagram at Jennifer Sise, and I'll answer your questions on an upcoming episode. So here's to more intentional connection and less grind, nine minutes at a time. ["sing-a-ring"].
