Here’s to more intentional connection and less grind … 9 minutes at a time!

Jennifer Sise:

If you had a dollar for every time you heard yourself or someone else say I don't have time for that, you'd probably be rich.

Jennifer Sise:

I know life can feel like a circus, especially when you're trying to juggle it all, and I know what it's like to be pulled in a million different directions and to feel like there's never enough time to do all the things for all the people. But I really believe that what you want is possible. It just requires some decision making and intentional action. You truly can't make time or find time. You have to set it apart, and I'll show you how to make big moves and take game changing action nine minutes at a time. I'm Jennifer Sise and being a mom is my absolute favorite job in the world, and now that my kids are essentially all grown up, I've had the honor of moming for over two decades. With two and a half decades of marriage, four decades of professional experience and a half a century of life under my belt. I've learned a lot about breaking cycles, building and nurturing intentional connections, trusting Jesus and the power of taking intentional action. I love helping impact-oriented women run their home life and business, gain traction in their day to day and have more time with the people they love the most. My heart is to share what I've learned along the way and help you get more of what you want out of your life and work. Every episode is designed to get you on your way to a quick win, so grab your favorite beverage, pull up a chair and let's start making more of your time. Hey there, and welcome to episode one of the In 9 Minutes podcast. I'm Jennifer Sise and I can't wait to spend the next nine minutes with you. Have you heard of Joey Chestnut? He is the Nathan's hot dog eating champion and he can eat 76 hot dogs, plus the buns, in roughly nine minutes or less. If he can do that in nine minutes, you can do anything.

Jennifer Sise:

If you had a dollar for every time you've said or heard some form of the phrase I don't have enough time for that, you'd probably be rich. Right? It's actually the number one excuse for why people don't do something in most research, and sometimes it gets tied with the excuse I don't have enough money. But typically the I don't have enough time excuse trumps everything, and this excuse in mindset is really one of the things that can keep you stuck and keep you from moving forward, because when you feel like you don't have enough time, you're really likely to not start things at all. So the thought you feed is the thought that grows. So the more you tell yourself or think to yourself I don't have time for that, the more you will live that out. And even when you hear other people or surround yourself with other people who consistently say I don't have time for that all of the time, you will start to think it and feel like you don't have time yourself.

Jennifer Sise:

So today I'm going to share a little bit about how you can get over that feeling, shift your mindset and potentially change your mind about time. I'm going to help you discover that you don't have to tackle things in big chunks all of the time. There is power in small, short focus, bursts of work, and that you can ultimately take game changing action in just nine minutes a day. So when you double down in one area of your life for nine minutes a day, magic will happen. I know this from experience and research and work with lots of clients, and if it can happen for them, it can happen for you.

Jennifer Sise:

The definition of doubling down means to strengthen one's commitment to a particular strategy or course of action. Sounds big, doesn't it? Well, it doesn't have to be so big. Sometimes we think the little things that sort of add up in our life don't need to be addressed with a strategy or course of action. But they actually do, and sometimes it's the little things that are adding up that take us off track the fastest. When we can change our thought process from the idea that we have to do everything so we don't do anything, and begin to experience the benefit of doing something, even if it's a little something, big things can happen when you double down in one area of your life for nine minutes a day. You can get unstuck, you can go from being uninspired to inspired, scattered to organized, you can learn a new skill, you can build intentional connection with your family and so much more. You can feel accomplished, you can feel re-energized and you can even feel like you can take a deep breath again, because you see and feel marked changes over time and you begin to understand and realize that those nine-minute investments compound.

Jennifer Sise:

So why nine minutes? Nine seems like a random number, doesn't it? Well, when I was doing some research a couple of years ago on strategies and tools for building connection with kids, I discovered that you can build intentional connection with your kids in just nine minutes a day, and when you practice nine minutes of focused attention and connection with your kids or the people you share life with, you can deepen your connection, strengthen your bond and move in a whole new direction in that connection Much more so, in fact, than you can if you spend an hour of distracted or consistently interrupted time. That nine minutes of focus is really the important piece, so I decided to dig into it even more. What's the magic of nine minutes? I really had to know more about it. I was really excited about this power of nine minutes, so I did more research and I came to find that studies show that an average attention span for getting focused things done can be between eight and ten minutes. Amazing, right, and my heart to build intentional connection and help people build intentional connection and use time intentionally in a focused way so that you can have more margin and enjoy your life more really drove me to dig into this idea even more.

Jennifer Sise:

People frequently say I don't have time because they feel like they have to clean the whole closet or tackle a huge project all at one time. You have to read an entire book, or that you have to do everything or nothing, because that's what it looks like and feels like everybody else is doing. But when you do that, you can miss out on things like bringing order to your household, quiet time, bible study, personal development, taking action in your business, starting to exercise you name it. The sky is the limit. But when you think you have to do all of it, most of the time you won't do any of it. But you can learn how to experience the power of doing a little bit at a time. It isn't only valuable if you do something for a long period of time or do it all at once. You can experience the value and the power of doing a little bit at a time because those investments compound.

Jennifer Sise:

I would argue that spending nine minutes of focus in certain areas of your life will change the game for you, and I have seen it happen over and over and over again. Some of the things that you can do for nine minutes a day are things like journal quiet time, start cleaning out your closet, bring order to an area of your home, write notes of encouragement to people, connect with your clients if you run a business, play with your kids, facetime a friend, clean out your car, build more connection with the people who matter most to you. You can do so much in just nine minutes a day. If you're fired up about this and you're ready to do it, I want to share one of my biggest tips with you. If you want to decide what to set apart nine minutes a day for, I want you to choose one thing that you've been resisting or that you've been moving from to-do list to to-do list to to-do list, and I want you to lean into that for nine minutes a day, because it is time to get that to-do list monkey off your back. So set a timer for nine minutes a day and get ready to change your life. I can't wait to hear what you decide to double down on, and I am so excited to come back next week with another episode about the power of what can happen in nine minutes.

Jennifer Sise:

Thanks so much for listening today. Do you have questions you'd love to ask, but don't because you aren't sure who to ask, or you'd rather not let the world in on not having it all together? I get it. I get lots of questions all the time, from parenting to business development, to Bible study recommendations to the best meal to serve a crowd and even how to navigate hard conversations. My husband and kids call me Google and since I'm a problem solver by nature and love research, it sort of fits. So I am so excited to answer your questions. You can share your questions with me by DMing @jennifersise on Instagram , and I'll answer your questions on an upcoming episode. So here's to more intentional connection and less grind, nine minutes at a time.
